Telephoto lenses are a very powerful tool for the wildlife photographer. They allow us to capture images that provide an intimate connection between the subject and viewer.

But they do have shortcomings, and longer lengths (400mm and beyond) can create problems that are not usually experienced when using shorter focal lengths.

In this deep dive, I look at:

“Micro-movement” and why some images look soft while adjacent images are perfectly fine.

Autofocus inaccuracies and how back-button focus can provide a solution.

Where Depth of Field can collapse.

Compressed perspective and its impact on composition.

Atmospheric effects.

As always, I’ll provide some options and solutions to help you to deal with these shortcomings.
