Born in the small town of New Prague, Minnesota, and raised amidst the sun-soaked landscapes of Scottsdale, Arizona, Cory Mortensen embarked on a unique journey that shaped both his life and literary career.

Choosing an unconventional path, his journey began with dropping out of college to immerse himself with a job on Wake Island, gaining valuable experiences that would later infuse his writing with a distinctive perspective. Returning to the United States, he started a dynamic career as a project manager for several prestigious architecture firms, coupled with a venture into real estate by flipping houses.
Cory established and grew a business into a multimillion-dollar venture, eventually selling it to pursue a shared dream with his wife, Kate.

Joe Bonington

Older listeners may remember Chris Bonington, famous as a British mountaineer. Joe is his son and I first met him while training for my Kilimanjaro climb.
 
 Joe ran a physical gym on Sydney's northern beaches.  He would train and coach people who were planning major exhibitions (including attempts on Mount Everest). As well as the physical training, Joe would step back and coach the mental requirements needed to successfully participate in extreme events.

Kara Sheldon

Kara Sheldon is the ecologist and one of the directors of the Southern Africa Field Conservation Project. SAFCP was formed following the participation of the directors in a local conservation project largely run by Dean and Justine McGregor. I joined it as a ‘guinea pig’ for the first run of a conservation programme that they hope will contribute significantly to local conservation efforts.

The project is located at the Woodlands Community Reserve, located just outside the town of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

In this podcast, Kara discussed the aims of the project, the importance of conservation and what to expect if you want to get involved.

Karolina Noree

Karolina grew up in Sweden and took a volunteering assignment in South Africa to work with horses. She quickly fell in love with the South African wildlife and started taking photographs.

Rachel Harris

Rachel Harris is the Managing Director of EHRA Namibia.

EHRA is a project I’ve personally been involved with, and I recently returned from a fundraising event with them in Namibia. Rachel talks about the aims of EHRA, their beginnings and their current activities.

She has built up an award-winning eco-tourism volunteer programme (active since 2004) which helps to fund their conservation activities. EHRA also runs a community education programme to help the local people live with the elephants and minimise conflicts.

Sandra Gray
